Dear friends!
You are welcome to visit the exhibition «Revived Ukrainian Treasures» scheduled to open on November 19, 2019. The exhibition is organized to let the visitors see rare museum items from the Dormition Cathedral that belong to the Fund collection of the National Kyiv-Pechersk Historical and Cultural Preserve.
It is within the framework of this exhibition that you will have the opportunity to observe the «Dormition of the Mother of God» icon. The representation of this religious image was created in the iconic workshop of Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. It is interesting to note that the icon is painted by means of double technique, that is, using tempera and oil paints, and it appears on the plinth brick typical for the Kyivan Rus. The history of the famous plot of the «Dormition of the Mother of God» icon dates back to the ancient times, when Pechersk Monastery originated.
The precious icon was found in 1962 during the excavations organized in the place of the ruins of the Dormition Cathedral. It was in an awful and almost destroyed state.
Today the “Dormition of the Mother of God” icon is revived and is kept in the preserved state as part of the Fund collection of the Preserve. It owes its good present condition to the persistent work of the museum workers.
