Curious facts about Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra
Did you know that
in accordance with the resolution of the Council of People’s Commissars of the USSR of May 30, 1944 «On the resumption of the activities of the State Historical and Cultural Preserve “Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra”» the institution was assigned not only the territories of the so-called Upper and Lower Lavra with the Church of the Savior at Berestove but also the territory of the Kyiv-Vydubychi monastery?
Shortly after the resolution was passed, the area of the Vydubychi monastery was leased to the Botanical Garden of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. However, one of the primary tasks of the Preserve was conducting a scientifically based restoration of architectural monuments. So in early 1946, an agreement was signed on the primary emergency-repair work on a number of monuments of the Kyiv-Vydubychi monastery. It was planned to restore St. Michael's Church, St. George’s Cathedral, bell tower, refectory (now – the Church of the Transfiguration), the Father Superior’s house, as well as to bring the grave of Princess Prozorovska in order, make a project of landscaping and improvement of the territory, etc.
At the same time, during the second half of the 1940s, most of the premises of the Vydubychi monastery were used as warehouses, residential or commercial areas.
