The caves are unique underground man-made systems. The Near and the Far Caves of the National Kyiv-Pechersk Historical and Cultural Preserve are underground monuments of architecture, archaeology, history and culture. 
They were dug in the high Dnieper hills between 5 and 15 metres deep.
Today the Lavra Caves are a complex system of interconnected underground corridors that connects cave rooms.
