Curious facts about Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra

Did you know that
there are three underground temples in the Near Caves of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra – the Church of the Presentation of the Virgin (the late 15th – early 16th centuries), the Church of St. Anthony of Pechersk (second half of the 16th century), and the Church of St. Barlaam of Pechersk (1691).
The iconostases, which still adorn the underground churches, were made and installed almost simultaneously – between 1814 and 1819. In 1814 in St. Anthony of Pechersk Church (performer – Zachary Brezgunov), in 1818 in St. Barlaam of Pechersk Church (performer – Fedir Korobkin), and in 1819 in the Presentation Church (performer – Fedir Korobkin) respectively.
Olexandr Yakushkin, a military engineer and retired captain, is considered to be the author of the iconostases design in all three underground churches. He became a hieromonk Arseniy and has been the head of the Far Caves since 1811.
The author of most of the icons in all three iconostases was the well-known painter Leon Antonov.
