Curious facts about Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra
Did you know that
there were cases of trial over brotherhood members for abusive acts committed in the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra?
In 1763, the Ecclesiastical Council considered the issue of the incorrect compilation of accounting books provided from the monastic estates. When comparing income and expenditure items, it turned out that the figures were specially changed in order to hide the thefts in the Svenskyi and Cholnskyi monasteries. In response to a request from the Ecclesiastical Council, the stewards began to justify themselves by saying that they simply did not know how to keep records properly, as they were not provided with samples. In the following years, they delayed the submission of reports, for which they were constantly fined. In 1768, the cellarer Ananias filed a complaint against Levkyi, the keeper of the Kozelets and Pereyaslav mills, for failing to keep proper records to cover up his abuses. The investigation concluded that between 1767 and 1768 Levkyi stole a lot of bread and state-owned rye.
