Exhibition "Orthodox Source of Spiritual Knowledge"
On September, 22, 2015 the "Orthodox Source of Spiritual Knowledge" exhibition opened in the Assumption Cathedral of the National Kyiv-Pechersk Historical and Cultural Preserve.
This year we celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Kyiv Theological Schools that inherited spiritual and educational tradition dating back to the early 17th century.
One of the major challenges for the Orthodox Church at that time was a new approach to education. Jesuits, on the one hand, and scientists-protestants - on the other, started discovering non-selective schools in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the federation that included most of the Ukrainian provinces. The schools were known for their progressive pedagogical methods of education. Therefore, to create their own school system of education has become a vital necessity for the country’s Orthodox population. The main role in the formation of the Orthodox-oriented school in Ukraine belonged to a fraternal movement. The date October, 14, 1615 is known as the day when the Epiphany monastery and school for children of all social strata was founded in Kiev. Further development of the Kyiv School is associated with the name of St. Peter Mogyla. In 1632 he succeeded in uniting the Brother's school with the school which then operated in the Kiev-Pechersk monastery. This is how there appeared the first school of Orthodox theological education in Ukraine that since then has transformed into the major center of religious and spiritual type of education. The institution has become the academy of knowledge for many outstanding missionaries, philosophers and theologians. Although Kyiv Theological Schools have been changing their official name, location, subject matter of education during the four century period, the inner unity of the educational tradition has always remained the Alma Mater constant element.
"Orthodox Source of Spiritual Knowledge" exhibition located in the Assumption Cathedral of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra will depict the brightest pages in the history of the Kyiv Theological Schools, starting from the beginning of the 17th century and up to the present moment. In focus there will be personalities that greatly contributed to transforming Kyiv Academy into the real example of the Orthodox education.
The organizers of the exhibition are Kiev Theological Academy and Seminary as well as the National Kyiv-Pechersk Historical and Cultural Preserve.
The exhibition presents about 100 original works of the 17th - 20th centuries. They belong to several institutions, such as National Kyiv-Pechersk Historical and Cultural Preserve Fund collection, Church Archeology Office of the Kyiv Theological Academy and "Orthodox Ukraine" museum.
