Curious facts about Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra
Did you know that Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra subscribed to periodicals in the second half of the 18th century?
Collegiate assessor Mykola Bantysh-Kamensky visited the post office twice to subscribe to “Moscowskie Vedomosti” and “Economicheskiy Magazin” in 1781 and 1782. It was done at the request of Kyiv-Pechersk Monastery and personally Archimandrite Zosima (Valkevych). The newspaper “Moscowskie Vedomosti” was published by the Moscow University twice a week, starting from April 26, 1756. It is not known since what time Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra became the subscriber of this periodical. But it was in the 1780s, when the newspaper experienced the period of real flourishing and modernization. It was then, when it was supervised by the famous publisher Mykola Novikov. At various times, the newspaper “Moscowskie Vedomosti” was published with different supplements. The one that was chosen by Kyiv-Pechersk Lavrawas “Economicheskiy Magazin”.
