The Entry of Our Lord into Jerusalem is a great Christian holiday commemorated on the last Sunday before Easter. In several Slavic countries, this feast is called Pussy Willow Sunday, because believers go to church with willow branches.
The collection of the Preserve gives an idea of how this significant evangelical event is reflected in various forms of art.
The icon of the Entry into Jerusalem (Galicia, the early 17th century, wood, oil) illustrates the Savior's entry into the city on a donkey surrounded by a glorifying crowd. The silhouettes of Christ and apostles who follow Him are drawn in a free line. This creates a sense of unity in one spirit. The crowd of citizens coming out of the gate is interpreted in a different way. There is no rhythmic ordering, faces are shown in a complex foreshortening. At the bottom of the icon a child spreads the garment in the way of the Savior. In the background, there is a man on a palm tree breaking branches to greet the Messiah.
The icon was restored by art restorer Oksana Belak in 2010.
The subject of the Entry into Jerusalem is also represented in the icon of the 16th century made of Cypress wood by the monks of the Mount Athos. It is the gem of the Preserve's collection. The icon is made in the most complex and intricate technique of pierced woodcarving. The Holy Mount was the center of sacral carved plastic arts. The icon is two-sided, round in shape with a diameter of only 10.5 cm. Round medallions depicting saints and narrative compositions are placed on its each side. Icons of such design were most often used by pilgrims as a travel iconostasis during the long journey to the holy sites.
The icon was restored by art restorer Liudmyla Pronenko in 2003-2004.

Let’s #stayathome and discover the beauties of the Preserve’s collection together!
