Curious facts about Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra
Nursery № 11 in the lower territory of Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra
Did you know that building №49 of Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra (House of the Far Caves Father Superior, 1812–1813) was used for nursery?
In this capacity the building functioned since the second half of the 1920s. Nursery №11 was located in the lower territory of Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra and was part of the “OKHMATDYT USSR” network of institutions (Department of Maternity and Childhood at the USSR People’s Commissariat of Health).
There were a lot of different premises in the building used as nursery. One could find there a reception room, space for “children’s rest” (bedrooms), children’s dining room, laundry and toilet. There were also living rooms for some nursery staff members, food and utility rooms, etc. The kitchen of the nursery was situated in the opposite building № 53 (Brethren’s Cells, 1898–1899).
