Curious facts about Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra

Did you know that in 2014 two memorial signs appeared in Pechersk? They were made by modern Ukrainian sculptors Oles Sydoruk and Borys Krylov to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Taras Shevchenko’s birth.

One of these memorial signs can be seen in the territory of the National Preserve “Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra”. It is close to the Church of All Saints. The composition consists of a symbolic stone, bronze sketchbook, a chair and a sketch of the Church of All Saints of Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.

The second, made of Tansky granite and bronze, is installed in Parkova Doroga (Park Road), opposite the Church of St. Nicholas. It was here, where Taras Shevchenko painted his “Askold’s Grave” sketch. To recreate Taras Shevchenko’s painting accessories in bronze, sculptors Oles Sydoruk and Borys Krylov used memorial items that belonged to the Ukrainian poet, and now are part of the collection of Taras Shevchenko National Museum.
