Did you know that:
in the 19th century, a lenten borsch or soup for the meal of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monks was seasoned with small dried fish. During the 1880s the so-called “Snetki” - European smelt, was bought for monastic needs from the warden of the Trinity Cathedral in Pskov, the merchant Fedir Shorokhov, and gobies were sometimes delivered from Nikolaev.
