Kyiv-Pechersk Curiosities
Did you know that:
the illegal construction was one of the issues of the Pechersk town day-to-day life in the first half of the 18th century? Thus, the inappropriate urban development in the Pechersk district is not only a present-day challenge. The increase of the Russian garrison of the Kyiv fortress after 1706 had various consequences. One of them was the insufficient amount of space officially allocated for the construction of housing for soldiers and officers. As a result, especially zealous soldiers began to build on unauthorized areas, namely in the immediate vicinity of the earth ramparts and even in the moats. It is known that Russian Tsar Petro II issued decrees to prohibit such practices. The houses were demolished, but later they appeared again. Moreover, some of the townspeople stole wood from fences to build their own homestead. Neither fines nor the threat of new destruction stopped such processes.
