Curious facts about Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra

Did you know that Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra lived under the curfew for some time? This regime was introduced in Pechersk Fortress in the 18th century and extended to the Monastery.

According to the documents of 1763, monastic service-doers could not move through the city after 1 a.m. Since then, they had to take special tickets in the Fortress office to get the permission to do so. Mykola Chycherin, the commandant of Pechersk Fortress, informed Archimandrite Zosima (in the world Valkevych) about this situation. Besides, he underlined the necessity to protect Pechersk city borough from the movements of “sneaky” and ordinary people by installing bolts and barriers.
