Curious facts about Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra Way of saving Lavra’s gardens

Did you know that to prevent the scattering of flowers, Lavra’s gardener father Hilarion used the method from his own experience?

He advised the procedure, which was difficult but effective. According to him, the largest root of the tree had to be dug out. Then it had to be drilled to the middle and left in that state for two weeks. After that, the wound had to be covered with fresh sprouts from the same tree and sealed with a soft wax ointment.

To prevent the unripe fruit from falling off, the main or largest lateral root of the tree had also to be dug out. It had to be split lengthwise for the insert to be installed into the split on one side only. This place had to be greased with the mixture of cattle manure and clay. At the same time, the other side of the root had to be left untouched. After that, the root had to be covered with earth.

The monk-gardener considered March and April to be the most favorable months for such interventions. He thought that that time of the year was not harmful for the future harvest.

In our next release, you will be able to read about other recipes and cases of their use.
