We continue to acquaint you with the most interesting old photographs from the Preserve collection under the project "Memories of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra".
Today we bring to your attention a selection of photos of the late 19th - early 20th centuries, dedicated to the Lavra architectural monuments.
Usually, we can read in guides that the architectural ensemble of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra has been already formed in the first half of the 18th century, but the development of its territory has continued. And, if in the second half of the 18th and almost throughout the 19th century, architectural transformations affected mainly the Lower Lavra, at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, significant construction work was carried out in the Upper Lavra. In the 1890s, in the place of an old baroque refectory with the church of App. Peter and Paul, a majestic neo-Byzantine church dedicated to Sts. Anthony and Theodosius of Pechersk with the refectory chamber was erected. At the beginning of the 20th century, the painting on the facades of the Trinity Gate Church was completely replaced. At the same time, the exterior of the Dormition Cathedral changed a bit - metal openwork vestibules were arranged in front of the entrances. The Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built in the place of St. Michael Home Church of the Metropolitan. A two-story building of the library of Metropolitan Flavian was added to the house of the Father Superior. During 1909 - 1914, major restoration work took place in the Church of the Savior at Berestove.
By means of photographs, it was possible to engrave the appearance of the Lavra monuments at that time.
Next week in the project "Memories of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra" you will be able to see historical photos from the series "Pilgrims in the Lavra".
Lets #stayathome and discover the beauties of the Preserves collection together!
