Curious facts about Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra
Did you know that in summer 1928 there appeared the idea to equip the radio station in the State Historical and Cultural Preserve known as “All-Ukrainian Museum Town”, which was located on the territory of Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. In particular, the radio transmitter and cable were planned to be installed on the Great Lavra Bell Tower.
To resolve this matter final`y, the Administration of Lavra’s Preserve held the meeting of the Commission on August 7, 1928. The Commission consisted of the inspector for the protection of cultural monuments F. Ernst, architects V. Os’mak and O. Kobelev, acting director of the All-Ukrainian Museum Town V. Shugaievsky and radio engineer of the Radio Broadcasting Division M. Naumov. The members of the Commission emphasized that any cables would spoil the general view of historical and architectural monuments of the 18th century. The utilitarian use of the Great Lavra Bell Tower was also impossible because of the cracks in the building. Therefore, the experts acknowledged that the installation of the radio was unacceptable.
