The greatest celebration for the Christian world is the Resurrection! The main event of Easter is the return of Jesus Christ to life after the death and burial. The main focus is not so the moment of the Resurrection - when Christ rises from the tomb as His descent into Hades, or Hell, to bring out the righteous waiting for the coming of the Messiah. The origins of the iconography are in the Byzantine art. The icon “Descent into Hell” from the collection of the Preserve comes from the ancient Ukrainian city of Holm (modern city of Chelm, Poland). It is dated from the early 16th century and represents one of the variants of the traditional composition of the Resurrection. The Savior with a three-barred cross in his hand is depicted in the center of the icon in the radiance of the Divine mandorla (representing Christs glory) against the background of the broken gate of Hell. He is pulling from tombs Adam and Eve. Groups of Old Testament righteous men and prophets stand on His both sides. The action is set against the background of hills, whose images are rhythmically repeated. The triumphant and victorious nature of the icons subject underlines the joy of the Holy Resurrection. In the 1970s, this unique sacral artifact was restored by specialists of the Kyiv Research and Restoration Workshops under the management of A. Bilyai. Today the icon is the centre-piece of the Preserve's collection and is under the constant supervision of restorers.
Lets #stayathome and discover the beauties of the Preserves collection together!
