In the Greatest Feast of the Christian world - the Resurrection of Christ, the Preserve presents a silver gilded Asterisk of the early 18th century from its collection. A round medallion with a masterfully executed enamel miniature “The Resurrection» decorates the top of the artifact. The Asterisk (translation of Greek ἀστερίσκον (asteriskov), or Star-cover (translation of Greek αστήρ (astêr), meaning “star”), is one of the holy vessels used in the Divine Liturgy for the celebration of the Eucharist - the most important Christian sacrament. The asterisk symbolizes the Star of Bethlehem. It is composed of two movable, cross-linked strips of metal. The asterisk is placed on the diskos, to keep the veil from disturbing and mixing the particles of bread. Traditionally, asterisks were made of silver and lavishly decorated like other liturgical vessels. The Asterisk that is presented to your attention is decorated with a magnificent ornament and chasing. The arches feature figures of Sts John Chrysostom, Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, Nicholas the Wonderworker and the cherubim over them. A colorful and bright enamel miniature depicting Jesus Christ representing “New” Adam adorns the top of the sacred vessel. The Savior stands on the broken gate of Hades with a Holy Banner in his hand and holds Adam by the wrist. This subject represents the culminating meeting of Old and New Adam in the history of the redemption of mankind. The figures of Eve, Kings Solomon and David, the Prophet John the Baptist and others are placed in the lower part of the medallion. In general, the miniature composition symbolizes the long-awaited Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Asterisk, together with other liturgical vessels, was contributed by Metropolitan Stefan Yavorskyi to the Dormition Cathedral of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra in 1703.
