Curious facts about Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra
Cleaning and research of Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra frescoes
Did you know that in 1935–1936 Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra frescoes were cleaned and researched by the well-known artist-restorer Pavlo Ivanovych Yukin?
This master worked in two churches of Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra – Dormition Cathedral and Gate Church of the Trinity. In the Church of the Savior at Berestove he unveiled inscriptions, a portrait of Petro Mohyla, the donator, and the remains of frescoes of the 12th century.
Art critic Mykola Chornohubov, who worked at the All-Ukrainian Museum Town at the time, believed that Pavlo Yukin washed the frescoes with a special and “mysterious” solution, the composition of which was almost unknown to anyone.
