Representatives of the National Preserve “Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra” took part in the Round Table “Protection of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites during the War: State of Conservation - Needs - Prospects for Post-War Recovery”

The Round Table was organized by the UNC ICOMOS together with the World Monument Fund and the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine. Experts of UNC ICOMOS, as well as representatives of Ukrainian World Heritage properties, and sites included in the Tentative List, were invited to participate in the meeting.

Kateryna Chuyeva, Deputy Minister of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine, welcomed the participants of the Round Table and informed them about the measures taken by the Ministry in cooperation with the international professional community as well as NGOs aimed to enhance the protection of cultural monuments and carry out the screening and visual damage assessment of heritage.

The participants of the Round Table discussed the current state of the sites, as well as the urgent needs and challenges that have arisen in the field of preservation of cultural heritage during the war. Furthermore, the National Preserve “Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra” offered its assistance in providing cultural heritage sites in high-risk areas with the necessary protective and packing materials received from our foreign partners as humanitarian aid.

As a result of the discussion, the most relevant areas of monument protection that need further work were identified. In particular, this refers to the systematization of the procedure for the on-site missions of expert groups and methods for priority emergency measures to be taken on the affected monuments; recording the state of monuments and maintaining an appropriate database; exploring alternative funding possibilities for restoration works and maintenance of monuments, etc.
