In our today’s photo collection, we are going to continue acquainting you with the employees of Kyiv-Pechersk Preserve and functioning of the institution in 1970s.

As it was mentioned in the previous release (№ 57), most of the photographs that have survived to our time, depict employees of Kyiv-Pechersk Preserve during various official or semi-official events, including state or museum meetings, various personal celebrations (such as anniversaries, retirement parties, etc.). In these photos you can also observe office interior details that reflect the past times. Among them, there are agitation posters, slogans, wall newspapers. Two photographs (Ill. 3 and 6) show, for example, issues of the wall newspaper “Museum Worker”. Unfortunately, it is unknown how long that newspaper was published, what materials it highlighted and who were the authors of that printed matter.

Besides, the tradition to visit memorials and participate in the excursion around “places of military and labor glory” on the eve of certain public holidays was also rather strong. If you look at Ill. 2, you will see the employees of Kyiv-Pechersk Preserve visiting “Battlefield for Kyiv” Museum and Preserve (today known as National Museum and Preserve “Battle for Kyiv in 1943”). This excursion to Novi Petrivtsi village happened on May 7, 1977. The next photo depicts the celebration of Victory Day in the Preserve itself.

One of the characteristic features of those times were “subbotniks” (Ill. 11). Most often they were held on weekends, in previous times. But then the situation changed and they started being organized on week days and were often directed to potato fields to help collective and state farms with their harvest (Ill. 13).

In the next release of “Memories of Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra” photo project we will talk about monuments of Lavra depicted on the postcards of the 1970s.
