In 2010, to the southwest of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra (now – 18a, Dobrovolchyh Battalion Street), an archeological monument of the Ancient Rus’ times was discovered by the Architectural and Archaeological Expedition of the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine led by Gleb Ivakin. The specialists of the Research and Archaeological Sector of the Preserve, headed by Serhiy Balakin, participated in that expedition.

The found object, which is now stored in the Preserve collection, represents a unique bronze artifact 8 cm long. It is a piercing-tool with a head in the form of a bird of prey in profile with a ring for hanging. The definition of this tool is arguable. A similar find, interpreted as a hairpin, was found in the economic pit of the 11th century during the excavations of the Upper Kyiv. Similar tools complete with other objects (small spoons, tweezers, keys), suspended on a base-holder, are stored in the collection of the National Museum of History of Ukraine. They were also found in Ancient Novgorod. Researchers have interpreted them as awls or piercings from an amulet pendant. The sacred definition of these items does not preclude their use in everyday life for household or craft needs. The most probable dating of the artifacts is 11th - mid-13th century.

Let’s #stayathome and discover the beauties of the Preserve’s collection together!
