Kyiv-Pechersk Curiosities
Did you know that
one of the greatest benefactors of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, Hetman Ivan Mazepa, could have become a prisoner of the Pechersk Fortress?
After the Battle of Poltava, Kyiv Governor-General Prince Dmytro Golitsyn wanted to receive authorization of Tsar Petro I to hold Mazepa and Charles XII as prisoners in the Kyiv-Pechersk Monastery. However, he did not succeed: the Ukrainian hetman and the Swedish king were able to cross the Dnipro River near Perevolochna village and find themselves under the protection of the Ottoman Empire. However, despite this, the generals and officers of the Mazepa’s and Carolingian armies were really temporarily kept in the fortress.
