A chalice (translation of Greek κύλιξ (kulix) or Ancient Greek ποτήρ (potēr), meaning “cup”) is used in Christian divine service during the Eucharist. The sacramental wine hold in chalice symbolizes the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ that is given to believers for Holy Communion. Traditionally, such liturgical vessels were made of precious materials and profusely decorated. The presented chalice was crafted by the famous Kyivan goldsmith Matviy Narunovych in 1751 (the jewelry stamp – “MN” and the city brand of Kyiv – “KIOV”). The chalice is decorated with flowers, bunches of fruits and ribbons. The overlay features the Crucifix with Bystanders and figures of Sts. Antony and Theodosius of Pechersk surrounded by angels on engraved medallions decorating the cup. Exquisite medallions featuring Gospel scenes surround the base of the chalice. Matviy Narunovych's jewelry masterpieces are distinguished by a particular skillfulness and artistic taste. The master crafted numerous valuable liturgical vessels, crosses, tabernacles, oil lamps, metal mountings of icons, covers of liturgical books, etc. for many Ukrainian, in particular, Kyiv churches. The Preserve collection has more than 30 artifacts by Matviy Narunovych (it is the largest collection among national museums). According to the carved inscription on the chalice, it was contributed to St. Theodosius (Far) Caves by hieroschemamonk Timotheus, the chief custodian of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra caves. This outstanding example of Ukrainian Baroque jewelry was restored in 2009-2010 by Vitaliy Kurlov, the fine art restorer of the highest category of the Preserve.
