An ancient tradition of wooden carved icon came to Orthodox art culture from Byzantine. An example of such art technique is the icon of the Last Supper of the 19th century from the Preserve’s Collection.

A fresco by Leonardo da Vinci of 1495–1497 from the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie of the Dominican monastery in Milan was the source of the iconography of the Last Supper Icon. In the 19th century, the painting of the genius master was often embodied in carving. The presented artwork features a multi-figure carved composition with an original design - a table with twelve apostles sitting around Jesus Christ in the center is fixed in the recess of a massive wooden ark. The contours of the ark resemble a basilica. Each element of the icon - a table, serveware, a luxurious fabric curtain hanging over the table were carved and fixed separately. The tiny size of the piece of art, 15 cm long, distinguishes it from other well-known similar works.

Let’s #stayathome and discover the beauties of the Preserve’s collection together!
