The Gospel is the Old English translation of Greek εὐαγγέλιον, meaning “Good News”. It tells us the story of Jesus Christ, his life, teachings, death and resurrection. No divine service or sacrament administering is conducted without this Book.
The Altar Gospel from the Preserve’s collection was published in 1746 in the printing house of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. Masters, who worked there, have always paid a special attention to the decoration of books. Thus, a highly professional master Averkiy Kozachkivskyi made engravings for this book, including the engraving of Mark the Evangelist.
The presented unique Gospel is dressed in festive cover. The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is represented on the lower part of the carved silver gilded front cover. The figures of Saints Anthony and Theodosius of Pechersk are placed on the both sides of the Church. There is an interesting fact that this cover was made earlier than the Gospel itself. The carved inscription on the internal edge of the front cover testifies to the contributing of Hieromonk Hilarion “to the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra” in 1701.
This unique monument of the Ukrainian Baroque is the gem of the Preserve's collection of the early printed books. It was exhibited both in Ukraine and abroad as well as demonstrated during the meetings of the Presidents of Ukraine with heads of diplomatic missions of foreign countries.
Today the Altar Gospel is on display at the exhibition at the National Historical and Cultural Preserve Hetmanate Capital” in Baturyn, Chernihiv region.
Lets #stayathome and discover the beauties of the Preserves collection together!
