Curious facts about Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra
Did you know that:
According to the Decree of the Council of People’s Commissars of the Soviet Union devoted to the issues of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, the Printing House of Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra was to be placed at the disposal of the Academy on January 25, 1921. However, the process of transferring the nationalized Printing House took almost two years, and books started being published only after the agreement concluded with the People’s Commissariat of Education of the Soviet Union on June 8, 1923. The agreement set the rules of joint management of the Printing House. The publishing facility was renamed. It started being called as the State Publishing House of Ukraine of the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. It functioned in the Monastery until 1933.
The director's office, chancery, book-keeping office, cash desk, main and secondary printing matter premises, assembly halls, book bindery premises, battery room, lithography premises and photo laboratory of the lithographic division operated in building № 8. Word and stereotype casting premises were in building № 9 while dining room and the club of the Printing House employees - in building № 10. The facilities of Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra Printing House were used for publishing purposes. Numerous samples of academic editions came out in the 1920s - early 1930s.
