Curious facts about Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra
Did you know that between the late 19th and early 20th centuries Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra was considering numerous proposals coming from different enterprises that advertised their products and pitched them to the Monastery? Among the goods for sale there were various types of equipment, numerous devices and different vehicles. They were offered by the:
- famous bell foundry owned by Pavlo Finlandsky;
- St. Petersburg “Prometheus” technical bureau (known for its kerosene lighting);
- London “Sturtevant Engineering Company” (that made hardwood dryers);
- Kyiv branch of the “General Electric Company” (“Allgemeine Elektricitäts-Gesellschaft”) Russian association (that produced dynamo machines and batteries);
- Moscow representative office of the “Werner & Pfleiderer” company (that specialized on machines for making mash and dough for rye bread, oil paints, dough for prosphora and “Teleskokar” steam baking oven specially designed to bake the Russian rye bread);
- Kyiv Iron Foundry and Mechanical Plant owned by Yakov Greter;
- civil engineer and architect Konstiantyn Srokovsky (who was the author of the equipment of mechanical stirrer and mechanical steam bakery designed for Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra);
- engineer A. Schultz technical bureau;
- Kyiv bureau of “Maltsovsky plants” stock company (that manufactured locomobiles);
- “Z. Khorzhevsky and R. Zalevsky” technical and commercial bureau;
- “Rex-Simplex” auto-warehouse;
- Kyiv bureau of the “Ortwein, Markovsky, Karasinsky” machine-building, boiler and foundry company that operated in Warsaw;
- “T. Block company” (that put up different goods for sale, such as typewriters, calculators, sewing machines etc).
