We continue to acquaint you with the Preserve’s Collections

Take a trip to our virtual museum during your coffee or tea break.
We are pleased to present to you the photo project “Memories of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra”
This time the project is represented by the series “Photographs with marginal notes”
The Preserve’s collection contains a small but quite valuable selection of photos with dedicatory inscriptions. Two of them were presented to Metropolitan Anthony (Khrapovytsky, 1863–1936). One of them belonged to Mytrofan Ban, Metropolitan of Montenegro, Berd and Primorsk (1841–1920), a well-known inspirer of the liberation struggle against Turkish rule in the Balkans. The other depicts Archimandrite Modest. Based on the title of the addressee, we can assume that this photo was donated in 1914-1918, when Anthony held the Metropolitan See in Kharkiv. It is unknown how these photos got into the collection of the Preserve. It can be assumed that they appeared in the Lavra archive or in the photo library of the monastery printing house when Anthony headed the Kyivan Metropolia. From there, they were handed over to the museum by a former Lavra printer, Archimandrite Philadelph (Pshenichnikov).
The next photo shows Mykolay, Archbishop of Warsaw and Privislensk (Ziorov, 1851-1915). On the reverse side there is a dedication to Mykola Petrov, the professor of the Kyiv Theological Academy, who headed for a long-time the Church and Archaeological Museum. The photograph could have been donated to the Lavra Museum in 1923 as part of the collection of the former Church and Archaeological Museum.
Metropolitan Serhiy (Stragorodsky, 1867–1944), Patriarchal Locum Tenens and future
Patriarch, presented his photo portrait to Metropolitan Anthony (Pankeyev, 1892–1938), who was ordained Bishop of Mariupol, vicar of the Ekaterinoslav eparchy on September 24, 1924. He was shot dead on June 1, 1938, together with Archbishop of Kursk Onufriy (Gagalyuk) and several priests.
The photograph of Patriarch Tykhon (Belavin, 1865–1925) with his autograph is unique in its own way.
Each of the presented photo documents has its own history, which requires further investigation.
Next week in the project “Memories of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra” you will be able to see historical photos from the series “Official events”.
Let’s discover the beauties of the Preserve’s collection together!
