The Kyiv church of the Three Saints was founded in 1183. In the 17th century, in the times of Petro Mohyla, it was consecrated in honor of three hierarchs - leading teachers of the faith, holiness and science of the Church of Christ - Sts. Basil the Great, John Chrysostom and Gregory the Theologian. Their veneration is reflected in art, in particular, in Ukrainian icon painting.

In the collection of the Preserve there is a wonderful icon of the Three Saints (the end of the 18th century, wood, oil, 48.0 × 30.0 cm). Sts. Basil the Great, John Chrysostom and Gregory the Theologian in magnificent Metropolitan robes are depicted on the icon full-length (from left to right) in the interior of the church. Their right hands are raised in a gesture of blessing. St. Basil the Great holds the cross in the left hand, St. John Chrysostom - an open book, and St. Gregory the Theologian - a crosier.

At the top of the icon, among the clouds and the Divine radiance, there is a triangle with the All-Seeing Eye. This is a complex symbolic composition, where the Lord is likened to the sun as a source of light, and the Eye symbolizes the way of Divine providence. Actually, the triangle is a symbol of the Holy Trinity: God the Father, God the Son and the Holy Spirit. In other words, Godhead has the ability to see everything, even the depths of human hearts.

Let’s discover the beauties of the Preserve’s collection together!
