At the end of 2019, the National Kyiv-Pechersk Historical and Cultural Preserve has initiated a series of exhibitions dedicated to one of the most worshipped churches in Rus-Ukraine, the Dormition Cathedral of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, constructed in the 11th century. During its centuries-old history, the cathedral has been destroyed and renovated several times.
As a spiritual center, the Great Church of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra has long been playing the role of the main preserver of the art treasures such as the decoration of iconostases, holy vessels, numerous contributions of supporters, etc.
The exhibition Revived Ukrainian Treasures (rarities from the Collection of the National Kyiv-Pechersk Historical and Cultural Preserve) was opened on November 19, 2019. It presents authentic objects, most of which were saved by devoted Ukrainian museum workers and restorers at a time of aggressive atheism in the 20-30s of the 20th century. Other exhibits were discovered by archeologists during the investigation of the ruins of the Dormition Cathedral, barbarically destroyed in 1941. These artifacts have been explored, attributed, and restored by specialists of the Preserve.
We present to your attention one of the most valuable treasures of the exposition - the monument of Ukrainian goldsmithing of the 18th century, a precious Riza that decorated the Dormition of the Mother of God, the icon from the Sovereign tier of the main iconostasis of the Dormition Cathedral. In the 1740s, the figures of the Mother of God and Christ with the Soul of the Virgin in the form of a baby in His arms were decorated with metal mounting and adornment covering the haloes. Later, the icon was completely decorated with a silver chased mounting. Presumably, the fragments of that decoration were destroyed during the cathedral's explosion. Valuable elements of the mounting survived because they were removed from the cathedral in the 1930s of the 20th century and transmitted to the State Bank. They were transferred back to the museum in the postwar years. The fate of the icon is unknown.
You can learn more information on the exhibition and its most interesting exhibits from the brochure Revived Ukrainian Treasures (Rarities of the Dormition Cathedral from the Collection of the National Kyiv-Pechersk Historical and Cultural Preserve).
