National Kyiv-Pechersk Historical and Cultural Preserve has joined the challenge #MuseumFromHome.

Dear Friends!
Take a trip to our virtual museum during your coffee or tea break and make your #quarantinediscoveries!
Admire unique cultural assets of the Museum Fund of Ukraine!

An important aspect of the museum work is the implementation of a set of activities aimed at the preservation and comprehensive analysis of artifacts from the Museum Collection. Curators, researchers, and restorers are involved in this process in close collaboration. Owing to their work we can admire the unique monuments of archeology, history, and art from the vast depository of the national cultural heritage.
We present to your attention an unusua icon of Our Lady of Kazan. The holy picture was created in Ukraine in the late 19th early 20th centuries. The icon is distinguished by the technique of its execution and decoration. The cover of the icon and its background are completely embroidered with several types of gold thread, which are attached to the surface of the icon by thin stitches of silk. The haloes and clothing of the Virgin and Baby Jesus Christ are exquisitely decorated with diamonds, amethysts, and colored glasses in frames and rosaces. The edges of the robes of Our Lady and Jesus are marked with corals and small pearls. The frame of the icon has decorative elements, supplemented by a miniature image of the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove, made of pearls and garnets.
In terms of artistic expressiveness and richness of materials, the embroidered icon stood out sharply among the icons in traditional chased metal mounting. Such icons were made mainly in convents, often at the request of individuals.

In the photo: the Preserves researchers art historian, Ph.D. in History Alina Varyvoda, keeper of the fabric collection of the Preserve, Ph.D. in History Anna Tytarenko and fine art restorer of the highest category Volodymyr Nazar while examining the icon.

Lets #stayathome and discover the beauties of the Preserves collection together!
