The destiny of one book can sometimes outline how the whole region engages in cultural interaction. Especially if it is an Altar Gospel. This Gospel was published in the 17th century in Lviv. It traveled to cities and churches: St. Nicholas Church in Novgorod, Trinity Hospital Monastery, Far Caves of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. During World War II the Gospel was evacuated and then returned... Its story counts almost four centuries of existence and circulation.
The Gospel was printed by the famous print worker Mykhailo Slyozka in the printing house of the Lviv Stauropegian Dormition Brotherhood. It is evidenced by the inscription on the engraving on the reverse of the tope page. Silver plates of the cover of the book feature traditional images of Jesus Christ and four evangelists. The stamps with the image of the archangel Michael (the city brand of Kyiv) on the plates show that a goldsmith from Kyiv decorated the cover. This book was often used in liturgical life. Its pages are bespotted of wax, the velvet of the cover was renewed. There are numerous marginalia made in different handwriting of priests on the pages of the Gospel. Their study is yet to come. Engravers, typesetters, bookbinders, and goldsmiths participated in the creation of the artifact. Only the name of the engraver, the hierodeacon George, is known. Unfortunately, most of these masters have remained anonymous, but their masterpiece speaks for them through the ages.
