Special exhibition dedicated to the World Heritage in Ukraine was inaugurated as a gesture of solidarity in Bamberg/Germany

The District President and Mayor of the Bavarian City of Bamberg (inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1993) opened a special exhibition "UNESCO World Heritage sites of Ukraine" as a gesture of solidarity.

“The pictures give an idea of Ukraine‘s incredible cultural wealth”, said Mayor Andreas Starke at the opening of the special exhibition. Of the current 1,154 World Heritage sites, seven are located in Ukraine. They are under threat.

The media release informs that the“protection of Ukraine's cultural heritage has become an integral part of ongoing relief efforts, although Russia is bound by the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage and the Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict. Some of the cultural treasures are currently being evacuated. Others are being shielded with sandbags, bubble wrap and wooden boards. Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, dozens of cultural sites have already been damaged and partially destroyed”.

Therefore, Bamberg with this special exhibition puts the spotlight on Ukraine's seven World Heritage sites:

1. Kyiv: Saint-Sophia Cathedral and Related Monastic Buildings, Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra

2. L'viv – the Ensemble of the Historic Centre

3. Struve Geodetic Arc

4. Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians

5. Residence of Bukovinian and Dalmatian Metropolitans

6. Ancient City of Tauric Chersonese and its Chora

7. Wooden Tserkvas of the Carpathians

They are presented on multi-piece metal panels designed by h neun Berlin at the World Heritage Visitor Centre at Untere Mühlen in Bamberg, Germany. “The exhibition is a gesture of solidarity, a bow to Ukraine's cultural heritage”, explains the initiator and Bamberg’s World Heritage Site Manager Patricia Alberth. The project was financed by the Denk-Mal Foundation Bischberg/Bamberg.
