Painting of the Trinity Gate Church
The wall painting of the Trinity Church was made in the 20-30's of the 18th century after the Great Fire of 1718, which affected most of the Lavra structures. This is the only fully preserved ensemble of Baroque monumental and decorative painting performed by the Kyiv-Pechersk Workshop. The traditional system of the monumental painting in this church has become a means of allegorical narration. Such approach was typical for Ukrainian Baroque art.
The theological subject of the church begins with the murals of the narthex. All the paintings represent a single complex composition. The image of God the Father in the midst of the Celestial Forces is placed in the main vault (“Shall gather together his elect from the four winds”). The procession of several multi-image groups of saints against the landscape is depicted on the walls. Together they represent Heavenly Triumphal Church.
The major part of the wall painting of the church itself represents thematic cycles that illustrate the parables and sermons of Jesus Christ, Lord's Prayer and the Beatitudes. The Holy Liturgy is a leading subject in the wall painting system. The subject of the Holy Trinity and the Descent of the Holy Spirit are also revealed in the murals. This is due primarily to the dedication of the temple.
The paintings are accompanied by quotations from the works of Petro Mohyla, Theodosius Sofonovych, Ioannicius Galyatovskyi and Lazarus Baranovych. In many cases, these are texts from holiday church songs and prayers borrowed from liturgical books. These inscriptions helps to understand the theological concept of the wall painting.
The landscape plays an important role in the wall painting of the church as if suggesting the popular name of the Holy Trinity feast – «Green Holidays». The compositions with elements of the landscape are placed not only on the walls, but also on the iconostasis icons, on the doors and carved stalls. The landscape background creates an effect of perspective filling of the space in large compositions on the walls and vaults.
The creative manner of the artists of Lavra painting workshop of the first half of the 18th century is reflected in the types of characters' faces, their poses and gestures, dressing, composition and colour scale.
