Curious facts about Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra

Engravings with the plans of Lavra Caves

Do you know anything about the engravings with the plans of Lavra Caves? They were created at the end of the 18th century and there were two of them. The first was made in 1780 (ill. 1), the second – in 1784 (ill. 2).

Both engravings are united by a single scheme. Sheets with plans are divided into three parts. Plans of the Monastery’s upper territory, Near–by and Far-off Caves are located in the central part. Atop one can see architectural structures that correspond to each of the plans, below – legends.

Hieromonk Amfilohiy, the treasurer of Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, is considered to be the author of both engravings.
