On the great Orthodox feast of the Annunciation, we present to your attention the icon of the Annunciation drawn by Kyivan artist in the middle of the 18th century. The icon is stored in the collection of the National Kyiv-Pechersk Historical and Cultural Preserve.
The feast of Annunciation marks the visit of the Archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary, during which he told her that she would give birth to Jesus Christ, the Son of God. People also called this day the third meeting of winter with spring, when spring finally prevails over winter. It is believed that on this very day God blesses the earth.
The iconography of the icon, illustrating Archangel Gabriel standing before the Virgin Mary with a lily flower in his hand, is typical of the Italian Renaissance painting. Since the 16th century such iconography has become widespread in the culture of other Christian countries.
This icon was painted for the iconostasis of the Annunciation Church of the Kyiv Epiphany Brotherhood Monastery. The unique object was saved from atheistic destruction in the 1930s.
The icon was restored by fine art restorer Olga Lisanevych in the 2000s. Recently the relic was exhibited in the framework of the inter-museum project “Appearances. Monuments of the Brotherhood Monastery at the National Art Museum of Ukraine.

Lets #stayathome and discover the beauties of the Preserves collection together!
