Curious facts about Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra

Cases of abduction

Did you know that some cases of abduction were considered in Pechersk in the 18th century?

On April 28, 1785, Kateryna Khytrovo, a resident of Pechersk town and daughter of Count Fedir Golovin, stated that Oleksandr Losev, the captain of Izium Regiment, had abducted her daughter and two maids. This happened in Florivsky monastery. Vasyl Klymovsky, the captain of Kyiv garrison, was given the task to investigate the case. He managed to free the maids (who were kept in the barn in the house of Lieutenant Bilyaev’s wife), but Kyitrovo’s daughter was never found. In addition, it turned out that Vasyl Losev, the adviser of Kyiv governorate, was the brother of the kidnapper. Having agreed with another brother, Lieutenant Serhiy Losev, he broke into Klymovsky’s house in the middle of the night, beat him and threatened to strike him again if he continued the investigation. However, Klimovsky did not give up and wrote a petition to Count Petro Rumyantsev. However, it is unknown, whether Kateryna Khytrovo’s daughter was eventually found.
