Dear Friends!

We continue to acquaint you with the Preserve’s collections.

Take a trip to our virtual museum during your coffee or tea break and admire the unique cultural assets of the Museum Fund of Ukraine!

The original work from the Preserve Collection is the icon of St. Onuphrius the Great - the famous Egyptian hermit of the 4th century, one of the founders of monastic life. The work attracts attention with its exotic landscape and unusual appearance of the Saint. The clothes of Onuphrius, who lived in the desert for 60 years, reduced to dust completely. A long beard covered his body. A date palm feeding the hermit and a spring of water miraculously appeared near his cave. The image of the royal crown on the ground reminds us that the Saint was originally a Persian prince. The icon has a half-erased inscription in Polish and the date - "1721". The cult of St. Onuphrius, revered by both the Orthodox and Catholic churches, during the 17th and 18th centuries became widespread in Ukraine and Belarus.

In his honor, St. Onuphrius Church-Tower was consecrated in the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra as a part of the fortress walls built at the end of the 17th century at the expense of Hetman Ivan Mazepa. Engraving by Innocent Shchyrsky in 1700 with the image of St. Onuphrius the Great was dedicated to the hetman as a great “worshipper of Saint Onuphrius, God-pleaser".

Let’s discover the beauties of the Preserve’s collection together!
