To the 20th Anniversary of the reconstruction of the Dormition Cathedral
Dear friends! We continue to acquaint you with the personalities who played an important role in the history of the Dormition Cathedral of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.
Today's story is dedicated to the Kyiv scientist, specialist in archeology and architecture of Kyivan Rus and Medieval Ukraine Viktor Kharlamov (August 17, 1946 - February 13, 1996)
In 1971 Viktor Kharlamov graduated from the Faculty of Architecture of the Kyiv Civil Engineering Institute. In 1970–1971 he worked as a researcher in the Kyiv-Pechersk State Historical and Cultural Preserve, and from 1973 in the Department of Archeology of Kyiv of the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. He is the author of more than 70 scientific works, a member of the National Union of Architects of Ukraine, a corresponding member of the Ukrainian Academy of Architecture, Laureate of the State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR in the field of science and technology (1983). He took part in the research of Podil, Klovsky Cathedral, Zamkova (Castle) Hill, Fedorovsky Cathedral, palace buildings on Starokyivska Hill, St. Michael's Golden-Domed Cathedral, Pechersk and Lyadsky Gates of Kyiv, the Church of the Savior at Berestove. He developed projects for the reconstruction of St. Michael's Cathedral and the Church of the Resurrection in the city of Pereyaslav-Khmelnytsky. Viktor Kharlamov is one of the authors of the reconstruction project of the Dormition Cathedral of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.
In 1982 and 1986, Viktor Kharlamov led the Architectural and Archaeological Expedition of the Institute of Archeology, aimed at the research of the Dormition Cathedral of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra in connection with the development of the reconstruction project. Then the architectural and constructive methods used in the construction and repair of the cathedral were clarified. The state of conservation of the foundations was assessed; and the characteristics of the technical condition of the surviving areas of the monument were specified. Specialists led by Viktor Kharlamov also examined the remains of the burial of Metropolitan Petro Mohyla (1641), destroyed by the explosion.
