Curious facts about Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra

Pechersk town taverns
Did you know that there appeared a lot of taverns in Pechersk town in the 1750’s? They belonged to Lavra and their number reached almost two dozen.
Local taverns, which were under tsar’s jurisdiction, were passed under the control of Moscow and Kolomna merchants in 1756. They successfully competed with the Monastery’s “drinking places”. Therefore, in order to maintain a steady income, the management of Kyiv-Pechersk Monastery increased the network of taverns and reduced the prices for drinks.
In 1750s the Monastery built a number of taverns in the soldiers settlements around Lavra.
However, merchants did not want to yield to the Monastery on this issue, and continued building new taverns and exhibition tents next to Lavra.
