We present to your attention the new release of the photo project “Memories of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra”

Today you will see the series of photos dedicated to the Textile and Embroidery Department of the Lavra Museum of Cults and Life (part of the All-Ukrainian Museum Town) date from the 1920s - early 1930s.

The collection of the Textile and Embroidery Department included thousands of original monuments of textile art and embroidery of the 17th-20th centuries from Europe and the East. The major part of the collection encompasses works of Ukrainian gold and silver embroidery of the 17th-18th centuries. The collection also included samples of folk embroidery, woven carpets, and Flemish tapestries. The leading place in the exposition was occupied by ecclesiastical vestments and textiles. The first  head of this structural unit was an archaeologist Mykhailo Rudynsky. During 1929–1933, the collection of the Department was under the curatorial charge of an art critic Maria Novytska, who made a significant contribution to the study of Ukrainian embroidery, folk weaving, European and oriental fabrics of the 16th – 18th centuries. The Department was located in the premises of the Metropolitan's House (building Nr. 2) and the interior of the Annunciation Church of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.

Next week in the project “Memories of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra” you will be able to see historical photos dedicated to the Department of Writing and Printing of the Lavra Museum of Cults and Life (part of the All-Ukrainian Museum Town).
