Curious facts about Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra

Did you know that Gottfried Johann Schädel, the architect of the Great Lavra Bell Tower, and Daniel de Bosquet, famous military engineer, stayed in both, professional and friendly relations?

Daniel de Bosquet, in particular, tried to help Gottfried Johann Schädel with his career growth. Thus, in 1750 he was going to delegate important works in the Pechersk Fortress (aimed at fortifying the mountain slopes above the caves) to G. Schädel. With this in mind, Daniel de Bosquet wrote the report to the Senate. Having emphasized high qualification of his colleague as an engineer and architect, he addressed the Senate with the request to set Gottfried Johann Schädel the salary of 600 rubles per year. Archimandrite Luka (Bilousovych), architect Ivan Michurin and Commander-in-Chief of the Pechersk Fortress Ivan Kostyurin also passed their certificates of approval for Gottfried Schädel at the request of de Bosquet. Those documents fixed the fact that G. Schedel built a series of brick buildings (such as, barracks for the soldiers of three regiments, a dwelling house, a state-owned house for the provincial and garrison gunnery office with a fence and gates) on the territory of the Pechersk Fortress.

No buildings erected by G.Schedel, survived to the present time, though some of them existed until 1783. According to the layout plan composed by Daniel de Bosquet, they were located behind the then abolished Ascension Monastery.
