Curious facts about Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra
Did you know that
in the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra various food reserves, including sour cabbage, beets, potatoes, and onions were annually prepared during the XIX century for the needs of pilgrims, the poor, as well as for people who worked for free at the Gostynnyi Dvir (Hospitable Courtyard)?
Vegetables were harvested in the gardens belonging to the monastery, and in the absence of the required quantity, they were bought from the peasants or at the market. Cabbage, beets, lettuce, and other herbs for the needs of the Lavra Gostynnyi Dvir were grown in front of the candle factory between the Near and Far Caves,. Patients of the Lavra hospital could drink herbal drinks with Lavra honey. Purchased or donated flower tea with sugar was usually consumed only on weekends and holidays.
