We are pleased to present to you the photo project “Memories of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra”

This time the project is represented by the series of photos “Lavra Landscapes”.

Already medieval travelers described the beauty of the Pechersk hills above the majestic Dnieper River, the golden-domed Lavra churches, and the blossoming monastic gardens in their travel records. Of course, for Orthodox pilgrims the main purpose of visiting the Kyiv-Pechersk monastery was to pray to its holy relics, but the memory of the beautiful Lavra landscapes remained with them forever.

As early as the middle of the 19th century, when the journey to Kyiv became much easier due to the appearance of the railway, the Lavra, apart from being a place of mass pilgrimage for Orthodox Christians, became the object of the so-called religious tourism.

Along with icon pendants, prayer books, church utensils, guides to the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, lithographic images of Lavra monuments, and later sets of postcards depicting Lavra landscapes were in great demand. Particularly popular were photographs depicting the Lavra architectural ensemble from across the Dnieper, as well as picturesque Pechersk hills, covered with lush greenery, from which the churches on the Near and Far Caves and bell towers raised to the sky and the roofs of small monastic cells were barely seen.

Next week in the project “Memories of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra” you will be able to see historical photos from the series “Lavra Hermitages”.

Let’s discover the beauties of the Preserve’s collection together!
