Curious facts about Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra
Do you know that in the beginning of the 18th century there were almost two dozen taverns and so-called “drinking dens” in Pechersk ?
The state-run sovereign taverns were opened here after the construction of the Pechersk fortress. As early as 1712, there were nine of them.
Some taverns of Pechersk belonged to the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, which had the right to manufacture and sell intoxicating beverages.
Monastic taverns included Samara, Verbka, a pub opposite the St. Nicholas Monastery, the one “near the stable” and “at Navodnytskyi hithe”, “a pub opposite Slup” (not far from the modern Arsenalna metro station), as well as the Yamka tavern, which until 1706 operated under the name of Randa in the vicinity of the Church of the Savior at Berestove, it was later moved closer to the St. Nicholas Monastery, and then to the soldier's suburb.
