Curious facts about Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra

Did you know that

the architect of the Lavra Bell Tower, Johann-Gottfried Schedel, several times during his life “changed his name” in documents related to his career?

Thus, after the arrival in Russia, he became known as Ivan, and his surname gradually acquired a Russified form - Sheidin or Shedin, as he was also called during his stay in Kyiv. Sometimes there is another way of writing - Shayden. Such variability in the spelling of names and surnames may seem unusual to modern man, but in the 17th-18th centuries such things did not surprise anyone. The names of other engineers and architects who worked in the Kyiv-Pechersk Monastery were also picturesquely distorted. For example, the Frenchman Lamot de Champie became Lomota Deshamp, the Italian Giorgio Lima became Giorgio Stepanovych, and the Scotsman Patrick Gordon became known as Petro Ivanovych.
