National Kyiv-Pechersk Historical and Cultural Preserve Received Lithuanian Delegation

On February 19, 2016 National Kyiv-Pechersk Historical and Cultural Preserve received a Lithuanian delegation headed by Mr. Juozas Olekas, Minister of Defence of Lithuania, and Mr. Marius Yanukonis, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Lithuania to Ukraine.

Mr. Liubomyr Mykhailyna, Director General of the Preserve, introduced the distinguished guests to the history of the Cathedral of the Dormition and details of its construction and renovation after repeated damage. Special attention was paid to members of the dynasty of Grand Duke of Lithuania Gediminas, who found their final rest under the arches of the cathedral.

At the meeting, the prospects and possibilities of implementation of Ukrainian-Lithuanian public initiative, restoration of the tombstone of Prince Constantine Ostrogski were discussed. The monument to the outstanding military leader and statesman of Ukraine and Lithuania was unveiled in the Cathedral of the Dormition in Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra in the 16th century and destroyed by the explosion in the Cathedral in 1941. The delegation and management of the Preserve noted the importance of restoring the tombstone as a unique memorial.

Mr. Juozas Olekas, Minister of Defence of Lithuania, thanked the Ukrainian side for meaningful and enjoyable meeting and wished us success in the implementation of cultural and artistic project. The participants expressed hope for future cooperation, which has gained special significance in the context of common Ukrainian-Lithuanian history.
